FURTHER A FIELD

If you want to explore the lower region of The Gulf then there is no better place than from Dubai. While Dubai have everything from ski slopes and malls to souks and beaches there are a number of interesting and varied locations outside the city which deserve a place in your vacation plans all in fairly close travelling distance.

Some of these are located in other Emirates such as the capital if the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. This is another large city not unlike Dubai. Within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is the desert city of Al Ain which borders Oman and shares an oasis with. Al Ain has a variety of sights least of all the ancient “falaj” irrigation system.

Ras Al Khaimah or RAK as it is know is the most northern of the emirates and is rapidly following Dubai’s example of development and expansion. With the Hajar Mountains rising just behind the city, and the Arabian Gulf stretching out from its shore, RAK has, possibly the best scenery in the UAE. From RAK you can take a day or overnight trip or tour to Oman. Check your visa requirements before going.

A dhow trip to the unspoiled “fiords” Musandam in Oman is a great way to spend a day getting away from it all.

Why not drive through the mountains and spend a lazy day on the beach at Fujairah which lies on the Gulf of Oman. This is a great place to do some diving from as the coral seas make it an ideal location.
