THE CITY - DUBAI

INTRODUCTION TO DUBAI

Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is located in the Arabian Gulf. Dubai has the largest population and is the second largest emirate by area, after Abu Dhabi. The Dubai emirate covers around 3,900 sq km, while the city itself is roughly 35 sq km. It shares borders with Abu Dhabi in the south, Sharjah in the northeast, and the Sultanate of Oman in the southeast.

Dubai Creek, a natural inlet from the Gulf, divides the city in two. It runs northeast-southwest through the city. The eastern section of the city forms the locality of Deira and is flanked by the emirate of Sharjah

Dubai is one of the fastest growing economies in the work offering a luxurious and relaxing holiday, beautiful sandy beaches, outstanding sunny weather, a massive array of shopping opportunities, sporting activities to meet most needs, first-class dining and countless other leisure activities.

Given all these, this is the reason Dubai is rapidly becoming one of the world’s premier holiday destinations with over 7.1 million visitors last year.

Even with development and progress unrivaled in the world the local population remains firmly conscious of the heritage and fiercely proud of their history which is built on the foundations of Arabic and Islamic tradition, based on family values, respect and hospitality to all.

Those visiting Dubai cannot fail to be impressed with the friendly welcome they receive from locals and expatriates alike. Dubai is tolerant and foreigners are free to practice their own religion, alcohol is served in hotels and has a liberal dress code. There is little discrimination of woman. In fact the immigration officer you may encounter at Dubai International Airport or Sharjah International Airports may be a woman. Dubai also has “pink” taxis, driven by women for women or families.

Of course Arabic is the official language but English is widely spoken as is a host of other languages. Most of the road signs and shops signs are in Arabic and English.
